Halifax gives debt advice
Ignoring tenuous financial situations is not beneficial in the long run, a bank says.
Halifax spokesperson Gareth Mackie advised people with money difficulties to tackle them head on.
The rising daily cost of living was putting a strain on finances and something should be done before debts got out of hand and could not be handled, he said
His comments come as the findings of a study by Help The Aged and Barclaycard reveals a quarter of people approaching retirement are in debt.
Mr Mackie said: "The advice is to keep on top of bills first of all because they're the important things to pay.
"It's not in anyone's interest for people to get into financial difficulty so don't leave it until things are in a precarious situation."
He also suggested that people who found themselves in difficulty should speak to their lenders and also get advice from another bank or building society.
