Abbey National Building Society was founded in 1944. In 1989, Abbey became a PLC and floated on the London stock exchange. In 2003, the company shortened its name to Abbey and became part of the Grupo Santander (Spain's largest financial group) in November 2004. Abbey's main offices are in London and it employs more than 25,000 people in branches throughout the country. Abbey offers a range of mortgages whether you're a first time buyer to or you're looking to re-mortgage an existing property. Abbey has a number of financial packages but its main ones are fixed and flexible rate mortgages and mortgages that track the Bank of England base rate.
